A Lame Duck American

There is a mind-set you adopt when you are about to move far, far away. You become a short-timer; drawing an arbitrary line in the sand – a sort of invisible cut-off date after which you won’t be forming any new relationships. Now when I meet someone I’m tempted to say, “Hi, my name is Toni and you can’t get attached to me.” I’ve put into place a “friend moratorium” because I just can’t like any more people – it hurts too much to leave them.
A perfect example is Reggie. I met her just under the wire at a Starbucks on Union Street about a month ago. She is hysterically funny, super-smart and very cool. Now I am going to miss her, damn it!
When it Rains, it Pours…
Wouldn’t you know it? The other day on the ferry a handsome man smiled at me PAST THE DEADLINE!
I was thinking…perhaps some rules are meant to be broken?

Rules ARE meant to be broken Toni – you never know what doors will open to you – and then you have more people to come visit you in ITALY!!
Yes, well this door, I think, I will slam shut. It can open up again when I am finally in Italia….taking no chances that ANYTHING will keep me from my goal. Hugs. t
It is always, ALWAYS when we are not looking that we find everything,
It is that old buying Christmas presents for other people routine….
Human beings give off pheromones when they are switched off the hunt I am convinced, that is why that handsome man smiled at you on the ferry – he could SMELL you!!
Loved the post it is very true, I am back in the UK and longing to return to Italy
even though I only jumped off a plane yesterday – sigh!
Lulu, I know what you are going through. I absolutely hate it when I get on a plane in Italy and everyone is speaking Italian and when you land in the UK or America, all of a sudden all the Italian disappears…it’s my least favorite thing…along with everything associated with leaving Italy. Come back soon. Hugs.t
Just live every day to the full Toni. Starting from now. I can imagine you are exuding happiness and inner tranquility which is of course why you are even more attractive than ever. It’s called the Italy factor….La vita e’/sara bella, bella!! xx
That, or they sense you are not interested in them and so they are intrigued. They want to figure out why? Ha! xxooooooxxx t
Remember: Italy is not Afghanistan. EVERYONE — old and new friends, as well as mild acquaintances you had hoped to leave behind — will want to come visit.
Susan. Oh, I never thought of that…got to be careful who I leave my forwarding address to…:) See you soon? hugs. t
Real friendships will survive a long distance relationship Toni.
So very, very true.
