31 Days of Orvieto: Day #27 – ARTISAN AGAIN…
August 27, 2015 by orvietoorbust

Day #27 of “31 Days of Orvieto features another remarkable ARTISAN, Loretta Lovisa. Loretta painstakingly and lovingly creates (by hand, of course) ‘Merletto di Orvieto‘ (Lace of Orvieto). In producing this traditional and highly intricate artistic craft, Loretta uses micro-thin threads to weave delicate trimmings, centerpieces, clothing, etc. into works of art. What makes this lace particularly typical to Orvieto is both the technique and motifs: Images of leaves of ivy, vines, flowers, figures and animals found on the 14th century bas-reliefs of the Cathedral of Orvieto are integrated into these artistic expressions. In Loretta’s dedication to this artform, she offers workshops in order to pass along the time-honored techniques to the next generation of Orvietani. She hopes, and so do we, that Merletto di Oriveto will not die, but live on and on. Like! Share! Visit!

Hello! Am loving your blog. I will be in Orvieto for 2 weeks this November. I love to eat, but need to work at staying healthy. Would you know of a yoga teacher in town? Or other options for exercise? It’s so American of me to worry about exercise on vacation, but I’ve become a bit of a yoga addict and love the idea of practicing while I am there. Thanks so much, Liza

Hi Liza, It’s so sweet of you to say that you like my blog – I’ve glad. Well, of course there is “Zumba” class on Monday or Thursday nights at 8:30 (I know, late huh?), then of course, I’m sure you read about the Anella della Rupe here:https://orvietoorbust.com/2011/05/22/anello-della-rupe-ring-of-rock/. For Yoga, I’ve got a name and phone number of a person to call. I will email it to you directly. I hope to be able to meet you while you’re here, but I’m living to visit my family in the states Nov. 15 and won’t be back until early December. Will I miss you? hugs.
Hi Toni, I’m sorry, I didn’t see your reply here until I started looking things up on your blog again. I’m here in Orvieto now until the 21st. Would love to meet you. I’ll send you an email.
Ciao,
Liza

Hi Saskia,
Thank you so much for all your support in bringing the wonders of Umbria, and specifically Orvieto, to your guests. It’s so nice of you to be so generous. I will read the post right away (the English one – my Dutch is a little rusty). 😉 xxo toni
Is this beautiful lace in a store in Orvieto so I can buy some in November?
Hi Margaret, Her shop is in the process of reopening, but may not be by Novemember. No worries, you can buy lace directly from Loretta. I just went back and added the link to her website. You can email her and arrange to meet her. She is a lovely woman who may also find at Bar Febo (her son owns it and she cooks the food and desserts in the upstairs cafe). http://www.merlettodiorvieto.it/?lang=en.
